Very early model; built by International Harvester Company (IHC). The Superb Halftrack!
The half-track M5/M5A1 was created out of a need to produce more (M3) half-tracks. Unlike tanks, which required complex transmissions and brakes for steering, the half-track needed only conventional automotive steering. This kind of vehicles were therefore very popular during the WW-II but also long time thereafter. They were easy to drive, operate and less training was required on half-tracks than for operators of fully tracked vehicles.
This Halftrack was, after it was active on the Western Front in 1944 and 1945, one of the units which was shipped from Belgium to Argentina to support the Peron regime in 1946.
Approx. 450 units were deployed in the Argentinian Army and remained in service until 2006.
This M-5-1563-ORD-12318 served under number EA 07712, most likely as a personnel / combined mortar carrier; the support for the mortar is still mounted in the vehicle. In the 1980’s these halftracks were upgraded with a reliable Fiat CP3 diesel engine bolted to the original drive train.
The vehicle is nicely restored by one of our clients with our technical support in the period 2017-2019.
New tracks, new road wheels and new tires. Uncut armor and very original with many small details! Vehicle participated in the 75-year D-Day Commemoration in Normandy with the BAIV Team in 2019.
