In 2024 it had been exactly 80 years since the Battle of the Scheldt—one of the most decisive operations of the Second World War. It marked the beginning of the liberation of Borsele, Zeeland and, ultimately, the rest of the Netherlands. Together with local initiators, heritage groups and residents, the region commemorated this historic milestone with great respect throughout 2024 and 2025.
The battle itself, fought by British, Canadian and Polish troops, was fierce and costly. Their mission was to secure the Westerschelde, the vital maritime approach to Antwerp. Without access to this port, the Allied advance would stall. In the autumn of 1944, Zeeland became the stage of an immense struggle; one that claimed around 7,500 military lives and nearly 2,300 civilian casualties, including about 150 from Borsele alone.
For this 80th anniversary, BAIV was invited to strengthen the commemoration with two tanks and their crews. Their presence added a powerful, emotional dimension: nothing engages the public more than the sound and sight of tanks rolling through the narrow streets of historic Dutch towns.
